Inside the mind of Dr. Chris Boyhan
What made you want to become a Chiropractor?
Losing the ability to do something I love to do was a turning point in my life. Growing up as a child, I suffered from chronic asthma and allergies that often landed me in the hospital. It was so bad that my allopathic medicine doctors told me that I would never be able to play sports.
In my heart I did not believe this. At the age of 10, my dream was to be a professional football player and nothing was going to stop me. As I fought to breathe, I worked through the suffering to earn the opportunity to be a student athlete at UMass. Along the way, there was never a day where I was not taking a pill or shot to mask something not working within my body.
By the end of my freshman year, I knew something was wrong. Completely broken-hearted and dreams going down the toilet, I was forced to take a medical leave of absence. During that period my back started to hurt for the first time in my life. I went to a chiropractor to find answers. His analysis revealed that my spine was bent 22 degrees, otherwise known as scoliosis.
When he said to me, “don’t worry we can change this,” I was in disbelief. Already having exhausted all my other options, I decided to give it a try. The education process intrigued me and the RESULTS blew me away. Within three weeks my spine had moved 12 degrees. For the first time in my life my breathing was regulated, my allergies gone, and my grades in school began to improve.
This experience was the tipping point for a paradigm shift in my world view. I was a sports medicine major and as athletes were coming in for care I began to question things. “Did you sprain your ankle because you sprained your ankle or is your spine out of alignment causing you to fall down and get hurt?”
Having lost something I love to do, it’s my life mission to help others avoid the same fate. I set the tone by helping them live their dream life without limits in the pursuit of human potential.
What technique do you practice and what are the benefits?
Our practice bridges the gap between health care and personal development. We do this with a minimally invasive, non-surgical approach.
The Pierce Results System is a state-of-the-art analysis comprised of case history, digital motion x-ray, and thermography. Real time data allows us to correct a spine precisely and track the healing process. All without the need of excessive visits or over adjusting of the spine.
Functional Neurology gives a detailed assessment of the ability to use receptors in the body to affect change in the brain. Exercises strengthen the pathways to restore optimal communication between the brain and spine.
OTZ Method is a clinically researched approach to alleviate frozen shoulder. This condition has plagued health care providers for decades and now we have an answer.
Do you have a specialty or area of focus that you love working with?
My practice focuses on functional correction. Underneath people’s pain lies an even more profound issue with the relationship between their brain and spine. When we restore this function, with the correct adjustment and neurological exercises, we create a spine that will last a lifetime.
The work I love to do ranges from neurodevelopmental disorders in kids, mild traumatic brain injury/post-traumatic stress disorder from sports and military, asthmatics, and frozen shoulder.
Did you have a career previous to being a Chiropractor? What did you do?
I practiced as a NATA Certified Athletic Trainer for ten years at the high school and college level. It was a valuable time in my life to give back what was given to me as a student athlete.
My dad was a trauma survivor from an accident while in the military. Without the doctors who saved his life I would have never been born. In gratitude the next ten years of my career were spent as a medical device representative for orthopedic trauma and spine surgery.
Chiropractic brings my experience full circle to create the best practice member experience possible.
What is your favorite thing that patients ask you about?
Can you help my child? Research has shown that chiropractic care is safe and effective for children. Additionally, it cuts down on health care costs by limiting trips to the allopathic medical doctor. Personally, if someone took the time to educate my parents about chiropractic care, I can’t begin to imagine the impact on my health and family dynamic. This holds true for every family in the world.
What is one thing you see all the time in your community that can be helped with Chiropractic?
Head tilt indicates that one side of our brain is stronger than the other. This not only affects the curve in your neck where vital functions occur but your ability to adapt to STRESS in your environment.
If you could give your community just one health tip, what would it be?
Move well, be well. Movement will unlock the gifts of your brain and spine, shaping your experience in life. This impacts the most important thing we have. The relationships with ourselves and the people we care about most.
If you had to describe yourself in five words, what would they be?
Energetic
Strong
Mindful
Driven
Fun
What’s the number one item you would save from your burning house?
My techno music collection. It is the fabric of my soul. The rhythm of the music is the key to life.
Aside from necessities, what is one thing could you not go a day without?
Loving my wife Heather. She is my best friend and an amazing person who makes me want to be a better man. She is a gift from God.
Do you have any guilty pleasures?
Espresso!!! My last vise on earth. I love to cold press my own organic raw almond milk topping it with a quality espresso for the best part of my day, a few moments of silence.
For what in your life do you feel most grateful?
The people who believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. One who stands out the most is my wrestling coach Sonny Greenhalgh. His accolades speak for themselves, being a NYAC and USA Wrestling Hall of Famer. On and off the mat win, lose or draw he was always there for me. He saw deep within me, my true potential as a wrestler and a person beyond what I could even comprehend at the time. It gave me the confidence to become the person I am today when I was finally ready to accept what he was always telling me about myself.
