Five Basic Things You Can Do To Boost Your Immune System

Whether you’re deciding to stay home or whether you’re still going out doing your activities of daily living, Dr. Kevin Day, AlignLife of Warsaw, shares some basic things you can do to boost your immune system:

#1: Drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day.

Water helps carry oxygen to your body’s cells which in turn boosts how your systems function. Staying hydrated also helps your body naturally eliminate toxins and other bacteria that may cause illness. It’s best to avoid sugary drinks and foods in most circumstances, but especially during a pandemic like we’re seeing because refined sugar can reduce how white blood cells perform and increase inflammatory markers.

#2: Make sure you are getting quality rest.

Make sure you’re giving your body 7-plus hours of sleep a night and if you have the opportunity… take the nap. This gives your body a chance to rejuvenate and heal throughout the day.

#3: Make sure you eat quality foods.

Stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables, lean cuts of meat, and things that are rich in Omega-3 fats. This includes dark, leafy green vegetables and any other rich colored vegetable that you can eat. Again, stay away from sugars and processed foods. Both can limit the function of your immune system.

#4: Try to reduce your stress levels.

While this may be a hard one to do, it’s extremely important. Stress can wreck your immune system. When cortisol (the “stress” hormone) goes up, the ability for your immune system to function declines because it decreases the number of lymphocytes or the white blood cells your body has to help fight off infection.

#5: Get regular chiropractic adjustments.

We find that patients who get regularly adjusted tend to stay healthier. Chiropractic isn’t just for those who struggle with lower back pain or headaches. It’s for your whole family. Everyone who has a spine and a nervous system benefits, so if you’re willing to get out, come see your local chiropractor. We’re here to serve you and to help make sure your immune system is as strong as it can possibly be.
