Howt taste better or perhaps addiing some DEET (misquito repellant)? Researchers from the Environmental Protection Agency have recenlty found numerous toxins in our water supply when samples were taken across the country. New reports have talked about pharmaceutical drugs in the water but the list of contaminants is considerably larger and more dangerous.
Tap water was found to not only have harmful medications but also cancer-causing pesticides, herbicides, caffeine, aircraft de-icers, arsenic, mercury, toothpaste additives and flame retardants. Our water treatment facilities weren’t designed to handle the extent of toxins in our water and the small size of many of these compounds.
We have the same amount of water on the planet as existed millions of years ago and we are constanlty recycling the same supply. However, due to
the billions of gallons of chemical solvents and other pollutants being dumped in our water, the treatment facilities can’t keep up with the demand for filtration.
In addition to the toxic compounds that make their way into our water, we also add additional chemicals causing further harmful effects on your body. As you are probably aware, we add chlorine to our water supply. Chlorine is added to the water to act as a disinfectant. However when the chlorine is added to our water supply it reacts with other elements creating trihalomethanes (THMs). When these compounds enter your body they can cause a host of disease states ranging from asthma and skin disorders to cancer and heart disease. Several studies have linked a higher risk fo miscarriages and birth defects when pregnant women consumed chlorinated tap water.
There are alternatives to chlorine to disinfect the water supply. Some cities such as Las Vegas, NV and Santa Clara, CA have successfully introduced ozone therapy to clean their water supply. This therapy began in Canada and Europe and has recently spread to the United States with hopes of being introduced to cities around the nation.
Fluoride is another toxin added to our water. Fluoride has been shown to dramatically increase the risk of leukemia in children and other bone diseases according to numerous studies. Its purpose is to supposedly decrease the risk of dental caries (cavities). Keep in mind that your city purposely adds this toxic chemical to your water because it may help with your teeth. However, I don’t think they understand that people are actually swallowing their tap water! Fluoride is almost as poisonous as arsenic and it is more toxic than lead and has been banned in several countries and even some US cities have rejected the process of fluoridation since 1990.
SIDE NOTE: Keep in mind that both chlorine and fluoride block your body’s ability to absorb iodine which is a compound that is needed to make thyroid hormone. If you are drinking tap water which blocks iodine it can cause hypothyroidism (low thyroid levels) creating symptoms of depression, fatigue and weight gain, otherwise known as the D.O.T. Syndrome (Depressed, Overweight and Tired).
Now we have drugs in our water! When you fully evaluate our water supply, you may actually start to think there are people literally trying to make us sick. My recommendation is to at least filter your water with a carbon filter. If you change the filter often it will create a decent filtering system. If you don’t change the filter at least every six months it will provide no benefit. In addition to filtering your drinking water I highly recommend a filter on your shower because the chlorine becomes a vapor when the water is hot and you actually inhale the chlorine. As an alternative and comprehensive solution you can also add a whole-house filtering system, such as a Reverse Osmosis system, which will filter all water in the home.
For peace of mind you can test your home water system for lead, pesticides and overall quality.
