(Health Secrets Newsletter) Metabolism is a hot item of discussion whether we are talking about fitness, weight loss, immune function, old age diseases, digestion or just about any physical problem humans face. Metabolism is much more complex than simple metabolic rate. In fact, metabolic rate is not the pivotal item it was previously thought to be and stimulating metabolic rate will do more harm than good for most people. Rather, we want to heal the whole metabolism. We want healing, detoxification, fat burning, energy levels, inflammation, repair of damage, etc, to happen at its optimal, healthy and natural level. To do this, we have many tools that will help us immensely if we will use them wisely. In this series of articles, we will discuss metabolism in the broader scope it deserves. We will discuss lifestyle changes, dietary changes and herbal aids that will help restore normal metabolism in the human body.
To begin our discussion, we need to understand something about metabolism in health and disease. When the body is healthy, the metabolism adjusts and adapts to fit the needs of every situation, and it could be said that the ability to adapt is the real definition of health. Sometimes, however, things begin to go wrong in life. Stress comes in, situations that are very physiologically challenging arise (physical stress, chemical stress, infection, long-term unnatural diet, etc). When the limit of the body’s ability to adapt is reached, we begin to get mal-adaptive processes. This means that metabolic processes that should be adapting to keep you at your best, have changed in a way that is abnormal or undesirable. Instead of serving you, it begins to sabotage your health. You have pain, weakness, accelerated aging and disease of every kind. Healing becomes abnormal and incomplete.
Now that we have labeled what happens, let us talk about how it happens. In our discussion, we are going to talk about the body as having intelligence. Indeed only a fool would imagine it does not. A body repairs itself, adapts and responds in the most efficient way to all burdens placed upon it. A panel of the smartest people that ever lived combined with all the computers that were ever built could not run one liver cell for a day. The body carries out thousands of different functions trillions of times per day in an orderly and self-analyzing way.
When the body has to climb a hill, move a tree, plant a garden, recover from an infection or a cut, there is no problem. The body does this with the least possible loss of energy, order and function. If, however, someone gets too much of such stress without proper balance of rest and nutrition, their body will begin to heal in less than ideal ways and may develop metabolic patterns that no longer function at the ideal.
In the modern world, most of us (at least in the English-speaking world) are not being damaged too much, worked too hard, kept from rest and kept from food.
We have different problems. We are exposed to toxins that our bodies do not understand. We are eating foods that aren’t really food at all. We are exposed to unnatural EM frequencies that interrupt our normal cellular frequencies and communication. The consequence is that we can be living a pretty comfortable life and still be sick in the worst ways with widespread metabolic mal-adaptations. These “alternative†metabolic states keep many of us tired, weak and in pain, confused and miserable. It follows that if we want to fully recover from this kind of problem, it will take more than just an herb and a green supplement. In the subsequent articles in this series, we will talk about what needs to be done, how to get started and the benefits of a few herbs and supplements as key parts of the healing process.
In conclusion, we have introduced metabolism as something more than just metabolic rate. We have also introduced the idea of mal-adaptive or alternative metabolism. We have discussed where it comes from for both ancient and modern peoples. In subsequent articles, we will discuss the first steps of what to do for our lifestyle, then our diets, and then how to supplement to heal individual metabolism.
