(Health Secrets) At least 40 children in Africa have become paralyzed after receiving the new meningitis vaccine MenAfriVac, according to a report in the French newspaper La Voix. The children were between the ages of 7 and 18, and have also suffered hallucinations and convulsions. Although initial reports were made in late December, the extent and gravity of this tragedy is continuing to unfold.
The paralyzed children were among 500 children being vaccinated in the small village of Gouro, in northern Chad. Members of the community are devastated, and there have been demonstrations against what parents perceive as their government’s negligence in protecting them.
MenAfriVac is a vaccine developed for use in sub-Saharan Africa. It claims to protect people up to the age of 29 years against a form of meningococcal bacteria by reducing the transmission of the bacteria from one person to another. The Meningitis Vaccine Project (MVP), a partnership between the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health and the World Health Organization, worked in conjunction with international partners such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to sponsor the vaccine.
MenAfriVac is the first vaccine to gain approval to travel outside the cold chain, meaning the vaccine can be transported without refrigeration or ice packs for up to four days. This claim is backed by the World Health Organization and the Gates Foundation, and is a viewed as a desirable feature for increasing the success of the vaccine campaign in rural and remote areas.
However since the tragedy in Gouro, this claim has come into question because it differs vastly from the information given on the website of its manufacturer, Serum Institute of India Ltd. The websites states that MenArfiVac should be stored and transported between 2-8 degrees C, and its diluting agent should be stored at 25 degrees C.
Relatives of the injured children, who remain critically ill and hospitalized, told La Voix that the children reacted within 24 hours of receiving the vaccine. Their initial reactions were vomiting and complaining of headaches, then falling to the floor with convulsions followed by paralysis.
They also reported that despite the cries of help from their parents, the regional authorities failed to respond, and the children were not seen by the only doctor in the region until a full week after they were injured. Fifty of the injured children were finally taken to a hospital 300 miles away from their home.
Vaccines in Africa are part of a bigger picture
Vactruth, an organization dedicated to promoting the truth about vaccines, is asking why vaccines are being pushed so strongly in a country like Africa, which lacks clean drinking water and basic sanitation services. They note that UNICEF blames Chad’s current outbreaks of meningitis and other diseases on “vital, common sense need”, not on a need for vaccinations. Major organizations have spend $571 million on this vaccination project, at a time when wells to provide access to clean drinking water can be constructed for less than $3,000.
But common sense does not rule the day when there is a larger agenda underlying action, an agenda that is preventing Africa from developing independently and self-sufficiently. Africa remains at the behest of the search for money and power that is the driving force of the West. It is a country rich in natural resources and the last frontier from which fortunes can be made. As such, it is being prevented from exercising rights over its own land and people, and its destiny is in the hands of power mongers.
Lack of basic nutrition, nutritional education, and lack of money to implement such a knowledge leaves the people vulnerable to any “miracle” drug or procedure that comes along. Famine and food shortages spurred by the implementation and subsequent failure of the genetically modified food crops being foisted on Africa compound the situation.
The vaccination approach to world health completely ignores the underlying issues that give rise to epidemics. Infectious diseases such as meningitis and polio will continue to persist in Africa and further weaken and demoralize its population, as though that were a part of a plan, as long as its population remains immuno-suppressed. That $571 million spent on MedAfriVac could have gone a long way in creating a more informed and healthy population able to resist disease, if it had been better spent on nourishment. But that is not part of the agenda for Africa.
