Here is some very good news for parents. A recent issue of the journal Pediatrics contains a study analyzing and confirming the positive effects of probiotics in maintaining immunity and preventing disease, particularly in children. Youngsters in the study experienced a significant decrease in cold and influenza cases following sustained probiotic supplementation. The study also confirmed that probiotic supplementation decreases the length and severity of illness symptoms in those who are sick.
Researchers conducted the double-blind, placebo-controlled study with 326 children between the ages of three and five, who were separated into three groups that received one of three milk solutions twice a day for six months. The first group received milk containing the probiotic strain Lactobacillus acidophilus, the second group received milk containing L acidophilus as well as Bifidobacterium animalis, and the third group received plain milk with a placebo.
The results of the single and combination probiotic groups, respectively, were reductions in fever incidence by 53 percent and 72.7 percent, coughing incidence by 41.4 percent and 62.1 percent, and rhinorrhea (runny nose) incidence by 28.2 percent and 58.8 percent, relative to placebo. Duration of fever, coughing, and rhinorrhea were also reduced by 32 percent and 48 percent, respectively.
As a result, there were crucial reductions in both the use of antibiotics in the single and combination probiotic groups equalling 68.4 percent and 84.2 percent and reductions in absent days from group child care equalling 31.8 percent and 27.7 percent, respectively.
Overall, the study results definitively prove that probiotic supplements are effective in maintaining health and preventing disease.
About 70 percent of a person’s immune system resides in the glands, mucosa and lymph system of the gastrointestinal tract. This means that the friendly bacteria that is supposed to reside in the intestinal tract must be in full force. When the population of friendly bacteria is at optimal levels, it is able to maintain a vibrant immune system and defend against foreign invaders. Simultaneously, these bacteria improve the assimilation of vital nutrients from food and other supplements.
While the body is naturally inhabited by healthy probiotics, inadequate diet, environmental toxins, antibiotics, and other foreign invaders can disrupt and even destroy these intestinal bacteria, leading to stomach illness, digestive problems, and other serious maladies such as Crohn’s disease and colon cancer. Thus, probiotic supplementation is a necessary component to any healthy lifestyle, whether it be through eating cultured and fermented foods like raw milk, kefir, yogurt, miso, and kombucha, or through ingesting probiotic powder, liquid, or capsule supplementation.
AlignLife features a probiotic supplement specially formulated for children. Pedia-Biotic (51g) combines Lactobacillus acidophilus and other Lactobacillus strains with two strains of Bifidobacterium to establish broad based protection. Pedia-Biotic (51g) is in powdered form, making it easy to mix with a beverage your children like.
Consistent and sustained use of probiotics is the way to maintain a healthy immune system. As the study found, giving children Pedia-Biotic (51g) on a daily basis will reduce or eliminate their need for antibiotics. For children who have taken antibiotics in the past, supplementing with Pedia-Biotic (51g) is particulary important, because antibiotics kill off the friendly bactera as well as the invaders. Any child who has completed a course of antiobiotics will have a weakened bacteria population and a corresponding weakened immune system.
While there is still much to learn concerning probiotics, it is certain that they are gaining popularity in the mainstream for their essential health-maintaining properties.
