(Health Secrets) Need some motivation to work out? List the reasons why you want to work out, and what will you gain from it. Then do like you would do with a child. When you want children to do something, you tell them why you want them to do it. “Eat your vegetables, they will make you grow strong and healthy.”
Your reasons for wanting to work out may be related to your physical health or they may be linked more to your emotional health like, something like “I want to be able to play with my grandkids.” Create the desire to work out by explaining to yourself what your want as a goal. “I want ____ so I will work out to get it.” When you create the desire or willingness to pay the price for what you want when the road gets bumpy, those desires will help motivate you to action.
Can you find motivation to work out through willpower?
“Willpower isn’t just a skill. It’s a muscle, like the muscles in your arms or legs, and it gets tired as it works harder, so there’s less power left over for other things,” writes Charles Duhigg in his book The Power of Habit.
Just as though you had lifted weights all day, you willpower muscle can become exhausted if you constantly pit it against everything the comes along. So at first if you want to go for a run after work, conserve your willpower muscle during the day, and make sure it will be there when you really need it, like for your run after work.
Duhigg also states that when people start exercising, “their willpower muscles strengthen and good habits spill over into other parts of their lives.” Why? Because you are working with the most valuable part of yourself — your mind — and you are changing how you think. As your will strengthens along with your other muscles, you will become better at regulating your impulses and distracting yourself from temptations. Then finally the magic happens – your brain becomes trained at helping you focus on and reach all of your goals.
Help your willpower find motivation to work out with these thoughts:
“I’ll ride the wave. My cravings will disappear after 10 minutes if I turn my attention elsewhere.”
“I want to be around to see my grandchildren, so I can forgo a cookie now.”
“I am a work in progress, and it’s all up from here.”
“It’s more stressful to keep sitting on the couch than to get up and get moving.”
