(Health Secrets) Many recent studies have documented that (DIM) may be the best supplement to stop breast cancer. DIM is a phytonutrient found in cruciferous vegetables that regulates hormone balance and cell behavior. If the thought of eating broccoli and cabbage every day is not appealing, you can still receive the amazing benefits of these vegetables through supplementation with DIM.
Why DIM may be the best supplement to stop breast cancer
One of the ways by which cancerous tumors become life threatening is their ability to set up their own blood supply in a process known as angiogenesis. Once that blood supply is established, nutrients are available to fuel rapid tumor growth, and there is very little that will stop them. In the last ten years, several researchers have documented that DIM is able to stop tumors from establishing their own blood supply, and identified the mechanisms by which this is accomplished.
All cells in the body have a lifetime and a program to follow from their creation to their death. Ideally cells die on cue and new cells replace them, in a process known as the cell cycle. Damaged cells that have lost their ability to follow their programming often refuse to die and can multiply instead, leading to life threatening tumor growth and proliferation. Researchers have discovered that low doses of DIM restore the ability of cancerous cells to heed their programming and die on cue, a process known as apoptosis.
Cancer gets its name from the descriptive pathology of a malignant tumor, which spreads its claws in all directions, much like a crab, and has a tendency to hold on to the parent tissues. This process of spreading and progression is known as metastasis, and is one of the most threatening aspects of cancer.
Researchers have shown that DIM is able to mediate the progression and metastasis of breast and other cancers by down regulating both the ligand and its chemokine receptor ( the molecule trying to bind and the larger receiving molecule). It does this in breast cancer cells as well as ovarian cancer cells, at the transcriptional level and in an estrogen dependent manner. By doing so, DIM lowers the invasive and metastatic potential of cancer cells.
Platelet-derived growth factor D is a newly recognized growth factor known to regulate many cellular processes, including cell proliferation, transformation, invasion, and angiogenesis. Researchers have found this growth factor is significantly inhibited by DIM.
DIM has been shown to effective whether breast cancers are hormone dependent, over expressing of HER-2, or negative for hormone receptors.
Recurrent or chronic inflammation has been implicated in the development of a variety of human cancers, and researchers have examined the anti-inflammatory effects of DIM. They found that DIM significantly decreases several markers of inflammation, including the release of nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6 and IL-1beta cells.
DIM is nature’s hormone modulator
Another way in which DIM may be the best supplement to stop breast cancer is its ability to modulate hormones. Researchers have discovered that the metabolism and growth promoting activity of estrogen is modified by the intake of milligram amounts of DIM. DIM is formed from its precursor, indole-3-carbinol (I3C), after the enzymatic release of 13C from parent glucosinolates found in all cruciferous vegetables. DIM is unique among all phytonutrients with regard to its ability to favorably modify estrogen metabolism in the direction of greater 2-hydroxy estrogen production. Improper metabolism of estrogen allows for oxidation, damage to DNA and cancer promotion to take place.
Epidemiology shows a high prevalence of estrogen related disease, especially breast cancer, in societies consuming a diet low in fruits and vegetables. And this is why, if you are diagnosed with breast cancer, you are told that estrogen is your enemy. Since conventional medicine continues to perpetuate the charade that diet has no impact on health, they won’t tell you this truth — a diet deficient in fruits and vegetables is what leads to breast cancer, not your own natural estrogen. Estrogen only becomes a concern when its balancing hormones, progesterone and testosterone, are no longer at optimal levels.
This is also why conventional medical practice treats breast cancer with drugs designed to place you in a perpetual state of hormone deficiency. And it is why, if you accept traditional treatments called the standard of care, you are left feeling like a shadow of your formal self with little energy and no libido. That’s before you decline into Alzheimer’s disease, heart attack or cancer recurrence!
Supplementing with DIM can restore and maintain a favorable estrogen metabolism and greatly lessen your risk for breast and other cancers. If your have already had breast cancers, DIM supplementation can drastically cut your chances of a recurrence. If you choose to continue living your life to the fullest, even after having had breast cancer, you may have chosen to use bio-identical hormone replacement. DIM can increase the safety of this decision by making sure the estrogen you are getting is properly metabolized.
DIM is not just for women
Estrogen is a growth promoting hormone in men as well as in women, and age related alterations in estrogen metabolism are an under appreciated factor in men’s disease. Improper metabolism of estrogen is a high risk factor for prostate cancer, and elevated estrogen in men further correlates to a decreased ability to dissolve blood clots. DIM promotes the same beneficial estrogen metabolism in men that it does in women.
DIM can often help restore sexual functioning in aging men. Many men produce an adequate amount of testosterone well into their 40’s and 50’s. The problem for them is the increasing conversion of testosterone into estrogen that is improperly metabolized. This is what’s frequently happening when problems in the bedroom develop. DIM prevents or greatly reduces this conversion. A man supplementing with DIM may find his pot belly receding, and his morning erections returning.
DIM and decreased cancer risk
Supplemental use of DIM increases the production of 2-hydroxy estrogen by 75% and decreases by 50% the production of 16-hydroxy estrone, considered the “bad” form of estrogen. An increased proportion of 2-hydroxy metabolites is well correlated to protection from breast cancer, as documented in several case-control studies. These studies have also documented that low levels of 2-hydroxy metabolites are associated with breast cancer in men, familial risk of cancer, uterine cancer, cervical cancer, and systemic lupus. Other established risk factors for breast cancer have also been correlated with low 2-hydroxy estrogen production such as obesity, high fat diets, and diets deficient in Omega-3 fatty acids.
DIM does not mimic estrogen or phytoestrogen, and it has no inherent estrogenic activity. DIM balances the body’s natural response to estrogen by adjusting the activity of metabolic cytochrome enzymes and specialized estrogen receptor molecules. In dividing cells, the growth promoting signal from estrogen is limited by the reduction of the activity level of the estrogen receptor system.
Supplementing with DIM
DIM is an appropriate supplement for pre and postmenopausal women, and for men too. Although obtaining nutrients from food is always preferable, the amount of cruciferous vegetables needed to provide the benefits of DIM frequently makes supplementation a better choice or a great addition to the diet.
DIM supplements can be found in health oriented stores or from the online natural health retailers. The bioavailability of DIM in increase by the addition of piperine from black pepper.
