(Health Secrets) The number of children being diagnosed with some form of autism has nearly doubled in the past four years according to the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. More than 1 out of every 88 children is autistic, and more than 1 out of every 54 boys has the disease. Needless to say, autism is the fastest growing serious developmental disorder in the U.S., and the numbers are continuing to rise. While most experts steadfastly cling to the belief that the cause of autism is unknown, the shocking numbers make it difficult to ignore the fact that these rising rates are linked to environmental issues.
Since it was first brought to the public’s attention in the 1950’s, autism has been the center of controversy as to what, indeed, is responsible for our children not being able to communicate, form relationships, and/or respond to their surroundings. The most popular of these controversies involves vaccines, with many pointing directly to the mumps/measles/rubella vaccine, and other vaccines that contain the mercury-based preservative, thimerosal . Recent research results have documented the vaccine link.
A segment of the medical community claims autism is the result of genetics, atypical brain development, and immune deficiency. But the evidence is becoming overwhelming that in addition to vaccines, food allergies, poor nutrition, environmental toxins, and exposure to heavy metals are creating the stratospheric rise in incidence, even though physicians try to explain it away by saying they are now more able to diagnose the disorder.
Those advocating for more research say the rate at which the disorder is growing simply cannot be explained away. The incidence of children diagnosed with autism 20 years ago was only 1 in 5,000, another statistic that supports the conclusion that environmental causes are behind the dramatic increase.
The conventional approach to autism says there is no cure, and addresses the behavioral aspects of the condition with such drugs such as Ritalin, Prozac and Risperdal. However, there are several natural alternatives that have shown great promise, improving overall health and behavior and eliminating the need for dangerous drugs.
A common factor in children with autism is low levels of glutathione, as well as an overall poorly functioning detoxification process. Glutathione is one of the powerful antioxidants produced by the body. When glutathione levels are low, free radicals can run rampant and interfere with proper cellular functioning.
The large load placed on children by heavy metals in their environment and from vaccines simply cannot be overlooked as a causitive factor. Testing can determine the level of toxic heavy metals, which can be removed from the body with chelators. Care should be taken to avoid accumulation of additional environmental toxins .
Another common thread in children diagnosed with autism is digestive disorders and imbalances in beneficial intestinal bacteria. Digestive issues lead to food allergies. They are best addressed by supplementing children’s diets with probiotics, a supplement that corrects beneficial bacteria imbalance.
Replacing nutritional deficiencies with probiotics and a food based multivitamin designed especially for children, is a good idea. The combination will help strengthen a weakened immune system, another characteristic heavily associated with autism.
Several studies have shown that supplementation with Vitamin D is extremely beneficial for the autistic child.
Autistic children respond favorably to dietary changes. Offending foods are dairy, gluten, sugar, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, coloring agents, and hydrogenated oils.
There are no specific tests for autism. Diagnosis is made by observing a child’s behavior. Parents are often the ones to first realize their child is not responding according to age level norms. Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning that diagnosed children can appear anywhere on the spectrum from exhibiting mild social impairment to displaying serious communication and behavioral disorders.
Minimizing the autism numbers requires education and prevention. Becoming aware of the dangers of vaccines, toxins, and unnatural ingredients found in today’s foods can go a long way in controlling the rise of this disorder.
Although it can be devastating for parents to receive a diagnosis of autism, natural alternatives can make a distinct difference in the lives of autistic children.
