(Health Secrets) Dr. Norm Shealy is one of the world’s leading experts in pain management. He was among the first physicians ever to specialize in the resolution of chronic pain. Dr. Shealy was a pioneer in developing safe and effective treatments such as Biogenics. In 1971, he founded the first comprehensive pain and stress management facility in the country, known as The Shealy Institute. He is respected world-wide for its innovative and successful rehabilitation approaches.
Over the years, Dr. Shealy’s intensive pain and stress management research has resulted in numerous pioneering treatments using non-drug approaches. His seminars and workshops are given worldwide, and attended by physicians and lay persons alike. Dr. Shealy has acted as consultant to leaders in every specialty, including the personal physicians of Presidents Kennedy and Eisenhower.
Dr. Shealy as been at the forefront of alternative medicine and alternative health care. In the mid-1960’s he introduced his major innovations for pain control —Dorsal Column Stimulation (DCS) and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, both now used world-wide. Shortly after, his emphasis broadened to include self-regulation with the addition of biofeedback, autogenic training and his introduction of Biogenics, a major tool for stress reduction.
At a recent workshop, Dr. Shealy stated that if you want to live to be 100 (and he means a vibrant healthy 100 years of age) what is required is :
- Having a positive attitude
- Maintaining a Body Mass Index (BMI) 0f 18-24
- No smoking
- Eating whole foods
- Exercising 30 minutes a 5 days a week
- Drinking less than two alcoholic drinks a day
These dictates fit right in with Dr. Shealy’s top causes of premature death, which are:
- Cigarette smoking
- Prescription drugs
- Medical complications
- Excessive alcohol consumption
Dr. Shealy is concerned that 40% of our children suffer from “a black cloud of depression.” He sees this depression as being initiated during the first seven years of life. It may also be initiated during conception because of the environmental conditions in the mother’s womb resulting from poor nutrition, stress and pollution (environmental, pharmaceutical).
He sees major trauma in the first seven years of life inhibiting the child’s ability to produce adequate amounts of oxytocin, characterized as the hormone of love. Supplemental oxytocin might provide hope for those suffering with depression, according to researchers who are currently conducting a clinical trial at the University of California.
Dr Shealy is a vibrant 84 year old who practices what he preaches. He lives a wellness lifestyle on his farm in southeast Missouri. He grows his own organic food and cans it. He takes 5,000 units of vitamin D3 weekly.
Dr. Shealy has designed recommendations for use to return to optimal health, and the Biogenics program to banish depression. These are described on his website. He describes many natural and alternative treatments for a variety of health concerns. In addition to depression, the Shealy Protocols cover the treatment of: migraine, anxiety, fibromyalgia, DHEA restoration, osteoporosis, addiction, diabetes, reduction of free radicals, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Each of his treatment protocols starts with conventional medicine, because he believes conventional physicians are experts at diagnostics and work well in acute situations. But if their treatment suggestions do not work or the risk if using them is too great, complementary, alternative, holistic, and integrative approaches should be considered.
